King Kalakaua Suite

Waikoloa, HI, US

Suite Description

His Majesty King David Kalakaua, The Visionary King is one of the most complex figures in Hawaiian history. He became a ruler beloved by his people, vilified by his enemies, and often remembered as the “Merrie Monarch.” One of the important legacies left by King Kalakaua was the revival of the hula which was discouraged by Protestant missionaries. In 1874 King Kalakaua composed “Hymn of Kamehameha I” which eventually became known as “Hawaii Pono i.” Today, King Kalakaua’s stirring tribute to the nation of Kamehameha is Hawaii’s state song and the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo.
